§ 01 — The Science

Your skin's sebum isalmost identicalto grass-fed tallow.

The fatty acid profile of grass-fed beef tallow matches the lipid profile of human sebum within a few percentage points on the dominant acid — oleic. Your skin recognizes it because it functionally is it.

Not for

Vegan skincare. Beef tallow is the point. If that's a deal-breaker we respect it and recommend looking elsewhere.

§ 03 — In Use

A pea-sized amount warms on contact. It disappears in about a minute.

1.

Warm it

Scoop a pea-sized amount on a fingertip. Roll it between fingers for 3–5 seconds. Solid at room temperature, liquid at skin temperature.

2.

Apply it

Press into affected areas — hands, cheeks, elbows, shins, anywhere reactive. Face, body, and lips.

3.

Don't rush it

Give it 60–90 seconds to absorb. A 2.7 oz jar lasts roughly 8 weeks for face + target patches, or 4 weeks for full-body.

Built for customers with dry, reactive, eczema-prone skin. We don't make disease claims — the testimonials do. Patch test first, and read the full allergen note if you have a sensitivity to lanolin or bovine products.

Rich, creamy, never greasy.

I've tried a lot of "natural" moisturizers over the years and this one surprised me. The texture is rich and creamy without feeling super greasy, and a little goes a long way. I'm using it on hands, face, and elbows — it works great everywhere. I'll be repurchasing.

My rosacea-prone skin tolerates it.

I use a lot of tallow products daily and this one stands out as especially rich and deeply moisturizing. I have sensitive, rosacea-prone skin and can use this without irritation or breakouts. Best on damp skin after a shower — or overnight on hands and feet, under socks or gloves.

Tallow is the first ingredient. That matters.

I've tried several beef tallow products. The texture is firmer than the whipped formulas but still soft enough to scoop easily. It soaks right in and makes my skin feel soft. A 2.7 oz glass jar is a good value for this quality of product.

Helps where other lotions don't.

Most lotions sit on my skin and do nothing for my dry patches. This actually feels like it's doing something. It hasn't completely cleared the rough spots on my legs, but it's better than the petroleum products I'd tried. Less than a pea-sized amount absorbs cleanly.

§ 06 — The Method

Small batch. Slow render.

The tallow in every BUTTR jar is grass-fed and grass-finished, rendered slowly under 200°F — not the industrial spin-render shortcut most of the category quietly uses.

Step 01 — Source

Pasture-raised, not grain-finished.

Grass-fed and grass-finished matters. Grain-finished cattle produce tallow with a fatty-acid profile shifted toward omega-6 — structurally the opposite of what your skin needs. The tallow we use comes from cattle fed on pasture through finishing, not a feedlot.

Step 02 — Render

Slow wet-rendered, not steam-rendered.

We render at low heat (<200°F) in stainless steel over 36–48 hours. This keeps vitamins A and D intact — both are destroyed at the industrial steam-render temperatures the category's volume producers use to hit a cost target.

§ 07 — Why we made this

We looked at the tallow category and saw a lot of story, not a lot of rigor.

Most tallow brands sell a homestead aesthetic and a short ingredient list. Very few name their farm. Very few publish a render temperature. Very few will tell you the fatty-acid profile of the specific tallow in the jar.

We built BUTTR because the category's best property — a near-perfect fatty-acid match to human sebum — gets buried under folklore copy on every product page. The science is the reason this works. We wanted a brand that put it on the front of the jar instead of the back.

Ten ingredients. Every one named. Every claim on this site sourced. The work is in refusing the shortcuts the rest of the category quietly takes.
